They solve different problems
A cable grill is a series of tensioned lines anchored to a building opening. A net is mesh attached around an opening; its mesh size and attachment points vary. For pigeons and small gaps, a net may cover more of the space, while a cable grill offers a different appearance. Neither should be assumed to meet a particular safety rating without documentation.
Check the intended user
A pet may climb cables or mesh, and a small child may reach around either at the sides. Ask how the whole opening, including the lower edge and corners, will be covered. Keep climbable furniture away from the railing and supervise children regardless of the product chosen.
Compare written proposals
Request details for the cable or mesh, fixing points, inspection and replacement guidance, and any applicable warranty. Compare installed prices for the same span rather than assuming either option has a fixed cost.
