Barrier across an opening or a railing?
Glass railing panels usually form the balcony guard up to a specified height. Invisible grill cables can span the open space above an existing railing. They do not automatically replace one another: the required guard design and height depend on your building.
Living with each option
Glass can give an uninterrupted outlook but shows fingerprints, watermarks and dirt. Cables have visible lines and gaps and need checks at their fittings. Ask how exterior surfaces can be cleaned safely, especially on a high floor.
Before changing a balcony
Check association and building permissions, structural fixing surfaces and any fire or emergency-access requirements. If replacing a railing, seek a design that meets applicable building requirements; do not treat a cable-only proposal as a structural glass-railing substitute.
