Assess the entire balcony
A cable barrier can reduce access to an open edge, but no grill makes a balcony childproof. Look at railing height, side and bottom gaps, loose cables, reachable windows and nearby furniture that a child could climb.
Do not assume a standard spacing
The age and behaviour of a child and the exact geometry of the opening matter. Ask the installer to explain the proposed gap, edge closure, anchors and applicable requirements for your building; request evidence for any stated safety performance.
Keep everyday precautions
Move chairs, planters and storage boxes away from the edge. Keep balcony access controlled, inspect the barrier for damage and supervise children whenever they use the area. If an emergency exit is involved, confirm that the installation does not obstruct it.
